چکیده

Nestedness is a property of binary matrices of ecological data and quantified by the matrix’s temperature, T. The program widely used to calculate T is Nestedness Temperature Calculator (NTC). NTC analyses matrices individually, turning the analysis of large sets time-consuming. We introduce ANINHADO, a program developed to perform rapid and automatic calculation of T over 10,000 matrices. ANINHADO can be useful to minimize the time spent in analysis and to compare real data against a variety of null models that typically generate a large number of replicates. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. On nestedness analyses: rethinking matrix temperature and anti-nestedness

The analysis of nested structures in sets of species assemblages across different sites or in networks of interspecific interactions has become common practice in ecological studies. Although new analyses and metrics have been proposed, few studies have scrutinized the concepts that subtend nestedness analysis. We note two important conceptual problems that can lead to terminological inconsiste...

Disentangling community patterns of nestedness and species co-occurrence

Two opposing patterns of meta-community organization are nestedness and negative species co-occurrence. Both patterns can be quantified with metrics that are applied to presence-absence matrices and tested with null model analysis. Previous meta-analyses have given conflicting results, with the same set of matrices apparently showing high nestedness (Wright et al. 1998) and negative species co-...

Null model analysis of species nestedness patterns.

Nestedness is a common biogeographic pattern in which small communities form proper subsets of large communities. However, the detection of nestedness in binary presence-absence matrices will be affected by both the metric used to quantify nestedness and the reference null distribution. In this study, we assessed the statistical performance of eight nestedness metrics and six null model algorit...

A new nestedness estimator in community networks

A recent problem in community ecology lies in defining structures behind matrices of species interactions. The interest in this area is to quantify the nestedness degree of the matrix after its maximal packing. In this work we evaluate nestedness using the sum of all distances of the occupied sites to the vertex of the matrix. We calculate the distance for two artificial matrices with the same ...

Spatially induced nestedness in a neutral model of phage-bacteria networks

Ecological networks, both displaying mutualistic or antagonistic interactions, seem to share common structural traits: the presence of nestedness and modularity. A variety of model approaches and hypothesis have been formulated concerning the significance and implications of these properties. In phage-bacteria bipartite infection networks, nestedness seems to be the rule in many different conte...
